David Edelstein, you’re a douche:
Edelstein: You can tell watching Cloud Atlas why the Wachowskis (who enlisted Tykwer) responded to the material—not only for its notion of a cosmic commingling (which in their minds perhaps necessitated the interweaving) but its racial themes. The brothers—sorry, brother and sister—have a yen for miscegenation, both literally and spiritually.
This isn’t the only or first time in the article that Edelstein references Lana Wachowski’s being transgender, but it’s most egregiously insipid. Are we supposed to think that he accidentally referred to them as brothers? “Sorry; I misspoke in writing?” You want to connect her transgender status to the use of actors/actresses in multigender roles in the movie, fine, go ahead, though that’s not very interesting to 99% of people interested in the movie or the book. This one, though, it’s just a jab. It’s too bad, really, because some of the other opinions he shares about the movie were interesting, and the discussion as a whole is interesting (and important, I think, given how amazing the book is) - but this is 90210 backstabbing.
